“Because of DACA, we’ve been able to achieve milestones that once felt out of reach; earning GEDs, completing college, starting a business, and even becoming homeowners. That is the American Dream.”

Growing up, working in the fields was nothing out of the ordinary for Damian Cruz. During the summertime, his parents would have him and his sister work the fields to get extra income. Coming from an immigrant household, this was simply part of their reality.

He’s not the only DACA recipient in his family. All his siblings are in the program, which means his family has firsthand experience navigating the challenges that come with the immigration system.

“Our roots, our culture, and our sense of belonging are deeply tied to the United States,” Damian said. “My siblings and I were raised here; this is the only home we know. We eat like Americans, speak like Americans, and dream like Americans. Because we are Americans.”

DACA has been a true blessing for his household, opening countless doors for his family, providing them with a sense of security and stability that they never thought was possible.

“Because of DACA, we’ve been able to achieve milestones that once felt out of reach; earning GEDs, completing college, starting a business, and even becoming homeowners,” he said. “That is the American Dream.”

Damian is proud of his family’s farm worker background and has joined the UFW Foundation in its efforts to advocate for farm worker and immigrant rights. He has been a part of a delegation of UFW Foundation volunteers and supporters in a trip to Washington D.C. to advocate for farm workers and immigrant rights.

“Field work is often looked down upon, but the truth is, the people in those fields are feeding America and driving its economy forward,” he said. “We are part of a strong, determined community, one that does not back down. We will continue to stand up and fight for farmworkers and for immigration rights.”
