Help for Crime Survivors
Immigration relief may be available for crime victims, offering protections and potential pathways to legal status for those who have suffered harm and cooperated with law enforcement. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows certain immigrants who are victims of domestic violence to self-petition for a green card, meaning they can apply for legal status without the abuser’s involvement.
These options include:
U Visas for victims of certain qualifying criminal activities, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, who have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse and are helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime.
T Visas are for victims of human trafficking, offering temporary immigration protection to those who assist law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of trafficking cases.
