Give Farm Workers Legal Status

Give workers who put food on our tables citizenship
Of the nearly 2.5 million farm workers in America, nearly 70 percent are immigrants and more than 45 percent are undocumented immigrants. As a result of their status, many immigrant farm workers are vulnerable to wage theft and other unfair labor practices. Immigration status impacts farmworkers’ wages, labor rights, health and safety. Undocumented immigrants are more vulnerable to exploitation and less likely to do anything due to fear of deportation.
Farm workers have been fighting for decades for the ability to live in this country without fear of deportation and simply can’t wait any longer. Farm workers have been putting their lives at risk and have kept the nation moving forward, keeping food shelves of families all across the country well stocked. Farm workers toil under the scorching sun, performing skilled and strenuous work in fields, dairies, and ranches to ensure we have food on our tables. In return, they need to be protected from the fear of deportation and have the opportunity to work, live, and travel freely in this country.
It is with this in mind that we urge the passage of the Farm Workforce Modernization Act (FWMA), which is legislation that would offer a path to legalization to farm workers all over the country. The bipartisan, farm worker-and employer-negotiated Farm Workforce Modernization Act would allow undocumented farm workers to earn the right to permanently stay in this country by continuing to work in the fields.
The FWMA is hailed by supporters as a pathway to citizenship for undocumented farm workers as well as a solution to the rising cost of food. Everyone agrees that this bill is vitally important towards the fight for legalization and would give more than one million undocumented workers legal status, a huge step towards complete legalization that we are all working toward
Farm workers have stepped up for our nation and now it’s time for lawmakers to do the same.
